Celebrating National Vegetarian Week: A Nod to Handcrafted, Hearty Pies

As the leaves begin to turn and a familiar crispness fills the autumn air, we welcome one of our favourite times of the year: National Vegetarian Week, starting tomorrow, 1st October and running to October 7th. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the vibrant, delicious, and satisfying world of meat-free food. For us, it’s a chance to honour the simple joy of a well-made, comforting meal, crafted with care and the finest local ingredients.

The Enduring Appeal of the Great British Veggie Pie

Long before vegetarianism became a modern trend, it was a way of life woven into the fabric of British culinary tradition. Hearty, meat-free meals have been warming kitchens and filling bellies for centuries, and nowhere is this more evident than in the humble pie.

We take immense pride in continuing this legacy. Our classic Cheese and Onion Pie is a perfect example—a true taste of Northern English heritage. Born from a need for a hearty and affordable meal, its simple, savoury filling of sharp cheese and sweet onions wrapped in golden pastry has made it an enduring favourite. It’s a testament to the fact that you don’t need meat to create a truly satisfying dish.

Equally steeped in history is our beloved Butter Pie. A true Lancashire specialty, which we have discussed before in our blog. Created for workers who abstained from meat on Fridays, this wonderfully simple pie of thinly sliced potatoes, onions, and rich butter is the very definition of comfort food. It’s a slice of local history, and a pie that proves the most wholesome ingredients often make the best meals.

Not Just for Vegetarians: A Pie for Everyone

National Vegetarian Week is the perfect invitation for everyone, including devoted meat-eaters, to try something new. It’s a chance to discover that a meal without meat can be just as flavourful and

fulfilling.

If you’re looking to make a simple swap this week, you can’t go wrong with our Cheesy Leek and Potato pie. And for those who fancy a smaller bite, our vegetarian 'sausage' rolls offer that classic flaky, savoury experience you know and love.

Looking to the Future: Our Commitment to Veggie Goodness

While we cherish tradition, we’re also passionate about evolving. We’re proud to offer a growing range of delicious vegan pies, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a handcrafted pie, whatever their dietary needs.

And because here at The Busy Food Company we’re always dreaming up new ways to celebrate classic British food, we’re thrilled to give you a little peek behind the curtain: our pie makers are currently busy in the kitchen developing a brand-new creation... a vegetarian Scotch egg! We can't wait to share it with you soon.
